Nabil Kuzbari appointed Honorary President, and Mag. Louai Kuzbari elected as the new Arab President

In the Ordinary AACC General Assembly, which took place on Wednesday, 23rd Oct. 2024, the Founding Father of the AACC, KR Nabil Kuzbari, made the decision to step back as the Arab President of the AACC after 35 years of continuous support and active engagement in the AACC. The General Assembly unanimously decided to appoint him as Honorary President for Life and thanked him with a big applause.

After covering the regular items on the agenda, a report by the President, Dr. Fasslabend, the detailed Activities Report of the AACC, the financial results for the year 2023, and an outlook for the year 2024 were presented. Following the Statement of the Auditor of the AACC, the discharge process of the Board, Executive Committee, and the Treasurer took place.

In Vienna City Hall, the place of the establishment of the AACC, the GA proceeded with the Election Process of its Board of Directors and Executive Committee. As the successor to Mr. Nabil Kuzbari, Mag. Louai Kuzbari was designated. Mr. Louai Kuzbari is the CEO of Vimpex and an AACC Board Member to date. Additional honorable Arab and Austrian Board Members were designated.

With a palpable sense of purpose and unity, attendees engaged in a smooth and decisive electoral process. The atmosphere was one of optimism and collaboration, reflecting the chamber's commitment to advancing its mission.

In a powerful display of unanimity, all votes were cast in favor of the proposed candidates, marking a significant vote of confidence in the chamber's future direction and leadership. The assembly highlighted the importance of cooperation between Arab and Austrian members, reinforcing the bonds that have been cultivated over the years.

Prominent figures were in attendance, representing both the Arab and Austrian communities. This gathering was not only about leadership elections but also served as a platform for discussing the strategic vision for the chamber’s future initiatives. It emphasized the ongoing commitment of both sides to deepening economic ties, fostering trade relations, and enhancing cultural exchanges.

On August 14, 2024, the Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce (AACC), in collaboration with Energy Burgenland, welcomed a distinguished delegation of Arab ambassadors and diplomats to Burgenland, Austria. This visit marked a significant step in strengthening the relationship between Austria and the Arab world, particularly in the areas of renewable energy and sustainable development.

The delegation was greeted by Mr. Hans Niessl, former Governor of Burgenland, and Andreas Czerny, CFO of Energie Burgenland. In their welcoming remarks, Mr. Niessl expressed his appreciation for the visit and provided an overview of his vision for Burgenland’s energy landscape. He highlighted how his vision of achieving energy independence from other regions in Austria became a reality. Through close cooperation with Energie Burgenland, the region successfully implemented one of its most impressive renewable energy projects. This initiative led to the installation of 420 wind turbines, the elimination of administrative obstacles, and the creation of a highly efficient financial structure, ensuring the remarkable execution of this ambitious project.

Andreas Czerny then presented the history of Energie Burgenland, focusing on key milestones and achievements in the development of renewable energy. He provided a future outlook that emphasized the company's ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability, with plans to further expand its renewable energy capacity and continue leading the region toward energy independence. Czerny also underscored Burgenland's goal of becoming the world’s first climate-neutral and energy-independent region by 2030, a vision that aligns with their ongoing efforts in digitalization, value chain optimization, and grid management.

During their visit, the delegation was introduced to Burgenland's remarkable achievements in renewable energy. They toured the region's largest solar park and several wind turbines, gaining

first-hand insights into the advanced technologies that have positioned Burgenland as a leader in renewable energy production. Since the installation of its first wind turbine in 1998, Burgenland has continuously innovated, achieving full energy self-sufficiency by 2013, and today produces 160% of its energy needs from renewable sources.

A significant part of the visit focused on the future of energy storage. Energie Burgenland, in collaboration with a specialized company, is at the forefront of developing a biological energy storage system. This innovative approach, currently in the testing phase, promises to enhance the sustainability and efficiency of energy use in the region. This development is a testament to Burgenland's commitment to staying ahead in the rapidly evolving field of renewable energy.

Moreover, the region’s strategy for 2030 includes ambitious targets such as increasing wind capacity by 1,000 MW, solar capacity by 2,300 MW, and storage capacity by 300 MWh. These efforts also include groundbreaking projects like the world's first organic wind-PV storage plant and the deployment of green hydrogen solutions, aiming to reduce CO2 emissions by 400,000 tons annually.

The day concluded with a luncheon at Das Fritz on Neusiedler See, where the Arab diplomats and Austrian hosts engaged in meaningful discussions about potential future collaborations. Notably, Energie Burgenland recently visited Oman and expressed strong interest in cooperating with Arab countries, signaling a significant step towards international partnerships. The event highlighted the vital role of the AACC in facilitating these high-level exchanges, promoting cross-cultural understanding, and fostering economic and technological partnerships between Austria and the Arab world.

At the conclusion of the event, the Algerian President, Mr. Latrusch, delivered a speech on behalf of the attending ambassadors and diplomats, expressing heartfelt thanks to the AACC and Energie Burgenland for organizing this event. His remarks underscored the importance of such gatherings in strengthening the ties between nations and advancing global sustainability goals.

On June 27, 2024, a significant working meeting took place at the Imperial Hotel Vienna, organized by the Embassy of Algeria to Austria and Slovakia with the support of the Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce (AACC). This event was part of the official visit of the Algerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, His Excellency Ahmad Attaf. The meeting aimed to strengthen bilateral business relations and explore investment opportunities between Algeria and Austria. It was attended by esteemed representatives from Austrian companies, dignitaries, and members of the Algerian delegation.

The agenda of the event was carefully structured to provide comprehensive insights into Algeria's evolving business environment and to facilitate direct interactions between the Minister and Austrian business representatives. The program began with a presentation by H.E. Ahmad Attaf, who provided an informative overview of the new investment and business climate in Algeria. He highlighted recent economic reforms, government initiatives aimed at attracting foreign investment, and the sectors that offer significant opportunities for Austrian businesses.

President Fasslabend outlined the importance of the Austro-Algerian relationship, which spans decades and is witnessing a new boost through the latest cooperation in economic agreements in the green hydrogen sector.

13 June 2024 - Salzburg, Austria

The Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce (AACC) organized a visit for His Excellency Talal Alfassam, the Ambassador of Kuwait to Austria, to Salzburg. Deputy Governor Mag. Stefan Schnöll warmly welcomed the Ambassador and his delegation. He highlighted the importance of Arab tourists, especially from Gulf countries like Kuwait, who are drawn to Salzburg for its clean water, well-preserved historic sites, and natural beauty.

Ambassador Alfassam provided updates on Kuwait’s latest developments under the new leadership of the Prince, which has brought a positive shift in the country's politics, economy, and society. He emphasized the strong relationship between Kuwait and Austria, noting the significant number of Kuwaiti tourists who visit Salzburg.

A major focus of the Ambassador’s visit was to strengthen investment and cooperative ventures between Salzburg and Kuwait, particularly in renewable energy sectors.

Dipl. Ing. Khouja, Secretary-General of the AACC, spoke about the trade volume between Salzburg and Kuwait, highlighting opportunities for expansion. He pointed out Kuwait’s economic strength, backed by having the world’s sixth-largest oil reserves and a dependable financial sector. He also mentioned Kuwait’s unique policy of guaranteeing full repayment of deposits in case of a bank failure.

Vice Governor Schnöll will extend an invitation to the delegation to the Salzburg Summer Festival.

The visit included a meeting with Andrea Stifter, Vice President of the Salzburg Chamber of Commerce, who expressed her connection to Kuwait and saw potential for increased cooperation in tourism and industry. She noted the presence of major companies in Salzburg like Palfinger, Red Bull, and Porsche, and the possibility for further economic engagement.

H.E. Ambassador Alfassam reiterated Kuwait's interest in partnerships focusing on renewable energy and energy efficiency. Secretary-General Khouja proposed a cultural and economic showcase of Kuwait in Salzburg during the 2025 Summer Festival.

The Secretary-General of AACC headed the session on investment opportunities in Iraq at the 27th Arab-German Business Forum

03-05 June 2024 – Berlin, Germany 

From June 3 to June 5, 2024, the 27th Arab-German Business Forum was held in Berlin, with the AACC (Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce) playing a significant role. AACC Secretary-General Dipl.-Ing. Mouddar Khouja led the session on Investment Opportunities in Iraq. During the roundtable discussion, Dipl.-Ing. Khouja engaged in dialogues on infrastructure, energy, agriculture, and notably, tourism. Participants included, among others, presidents of local chambers in Iraq. Additionally, various projects in Iraq were highlighted, attracting significant interest from numerous German entrepreneurs who viewed Iraq as a promising market.

Moreover, Dipl.-Ing. Khouja met with H.E. Said bin Mohammed bin Ahmed Al Saqri, Omani Minister of Economy; H.E. Maitha Al Mahrouqi, Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman to Germany; and Dr. Abdullah Masaud Al Harthi, Board Member of the Omani Chamber of Commerce & Industry, to discuss enhancing future economic collaborations between Oman and Austria. During this meeting, Secretary-General Khouja had the honor of inviting the Omani delegation to participate in the upcoming 14th Austro-Arab Economic Forum, which will be part of the 35th Anniversary Celebrations of the AACC on October 23, 2024.

Secretary-General of the Ghorfa (Arab-German Chamber of Commerce and Industry), Abdulaziz Al-Mikhlafi, has been instrumental in promoting sustainable development, digital transformation, and bilateral investment opportunities. These critical issues were central to the discussions, reflecting the Ghorfa’s commitment to addressing the multifaceted nature of German-Arab economic relations.

Aside from the Forum, the General Assembly took place, where the previous President, Dr. Peter Ramsauer, stepped down. Mr. Olaf Hoffmann, Chairman of the Board of the Dorsch Group, has been unanimously elected as the new President of the Ghorfa. Additionally, the Board elections took place. Sheikh Khalifa Al-Thani was elected as the first Vice President, Dr. Joachim Pfeiffer as the second Vice President, and Mr. Khalil Al Hajj Toufiq as the third Vice President.

Austrian-Saudi Business Forum - 28th May 2024

On Tuesday, 28th May, the AACC was privileged to join the Austrian-Saudi Business Forum, hosted by the Austrian Economic Chamber (WKO). During this event, Minister Al-Ibrahim was introduced to a selection of Austrian companies showcasing their innovative solutions, including independent AI algorithms for complex problem-solving, new export finance solutions, and green energy technologies.

A highlight of the forum was a presentation by Rakan Al-Garaawi, a representative of the Saudi Ministry of Investment, who provided insights into Saudi Arabia’s dynamic investment environment. He emphasized the significance of the National Investment Strategy (NIS) within the context of Vision 2030. Saudi Arabia's economy is notable for its robust and rapid growth, boasting the highest growth rate among G20 countries in 2022. With 60% of its population under 35 years, the country has a strong labor force, excellent international connectivity through 13 international airports and 10 seaports, and ambitious sustainability targets, including a goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2060.

Key initiatives to foster investment include the establishment of five Special Economic Zones focusing on various sectors and the Global Supply Chain Resilience Initiative (GSCRI), which aims to bolster local resources and capabilities while attracting foreign direct investments (FDIs) in export-oriented products and services. The evening of the 28th May featured an exclusive highlight: the official reception of Minister Al-Ibrahim at the majestic Upper Belvedere, organized by the Embassy of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The event was a resounding success, bringing together distinguished representatives from the Embassy, Saudi and Austrian ministries, business leaders, and other select stakeholders. The evening offered a perfect blend of cordial hospitality, welcoming speeches, traditional Saudi musical performances, delectable culinary delights, and an exquisite display of Austrian art history, with the unique paintings of Gustav Klimt providing a stunning backdrop. Most importantly, it facilitated excellent networking opportunities.

Visiting Program for the Saudi Delegation - 29th May 2024

On Wednesday, 29th May, the AACC organized an insightful visiting program in Vienna for the Saudi business delegation and ministry representatives.

The day commenced with a tour of the Spittelau waste incineration plant, one of Vienna's three thermal waste treatment plants, renowned for its façade artistically designed by the famous artist Hundertwasser. The concept of converting waste to energy, reducing landfill use, and incorporating architectural artistry was particularly inspiring to the Saudi delegation.

The excursion continued with an exclusive tour of the newly restored Austrian Parliament, facilitated by Federal Councilor Günther Kovacs. The delegation was enlightened about Austria's parliamentary system, historical architecture, and the intricate process of renovating historical structures. The delegation expressed admiration for the building’s historical significance, beautifully restored interiors, and rich heritage.

The day concluded with a tour of the urban development project Seestadt Aspern, a unique and innovative urbanization initiative in Europe. The delegation engaged in discussions about smart city concepts, the integration of technology, data, and end-user connectivity, and the importance of education in green and sustainable housing. The tour culminated with a group photo by the turquoise lake at the center of Seestadt, against the backdrop of the skyline featuring sustainable and wooden buildings.

The Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce, in partnership with the Federation of Austrian Industries, orchestrated a thriving gathering with the Ambassadors and Representatives of the Arab States on 30th April to foster bilateral relations and explore avenues for economic collaboration. The event saw the participation of ambassadors and representatives from Algeria, Egypt, GCC, Iraq, Tunisia, Kuwait, Morocco, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Sudan, Syria, and Yemen, alongside the OPEC Secretary General and Vice-President of OPEC Fund.

Mr. Georg Knill, President of the Federation of Austrian Industries, took the stage to introduce the Federation to the audience, providing a comprehensive overview of its pivotal role in political spheres, adeptly representing the interests of its members.

Following Mr. Knill's introduction, His Excellency Dr. Abdullah Tawlah, Ambassador of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Current President of the Arab Ambassadors Council, underscored the significance of fostering robust ties between Austria and the Arab nations.

Dipl.-Ing. Mouddar Khouja, Secretary General of the Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce, complemented His Excellency's remarks with a nuanced elucidation of the history and trade relations between Austria and the Arab countries. With more than half of the world’s oil reserves being located in the Arab countries, and some of the fastest growing economies with GDP growth reaching up to 9%, the Oil & Gas sector remain to play a pivotal role in the future, although we currently see a strong trend for  diversification, especially in the Gulf countries.

His Excellency Alghais, Secretary General of OPEC, underscored the strategic significance of OPEC in shaping future energy sourcing, emphasizing its pivotal role in facilitating the development of emerging trends in energy production. From pioneering resource development initiatives to navigating the dynamic landscape of energy composition, OPEC is poised to address the steadily escalating demand for energy in the forthcoming years. He emphasized OPEC's dual role, not only as a key influencer in shaping future energy paradigms but also as a staunch advocate for development aid and economic empowerment.

Transitioning the discourse to Her Excellency Al-Sheiby, Vice-President of the OPEC Fund, attention was drawn to the pivotal role assumed by the organization as a primary purveyor of development assistance. The OPEC Fund remains steadfast in its commitment to fostering economic growth and social advancement in low- and middle-income nations worldwide, irrespective of their affiliation with OPEC.

The discussions underscored the commitment of all stakeholders to support energy transition and create future collaborations especially in this field. The meeting served as a platform for constructive dialogue and the exchange of ideas, laying the groundwork for future collaborations between The Federation of Austrian Industries and the Arab states.

AACC in cooperation with the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq to support the visit of an Iraqi large landowner and expert on agronomy and crop sciences

11-13 March 2024 – Austria

Between March 11^th and 13^th, the AACC , in collaboration with the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq, facilitated a delegation led by Mr. Azad Mohammed ABDULLAH, a prominent Iraqi landowner and a peerless expert in agrology. The delegation's objective was to engage in substantive dialogues and knowledge exchange with prominent Austrian actors in the spheres of agriculture, academia, and public institutions. Mr. Azad's particular focus lay on pioneering research and technology, as well as the strategic deployment of multi-seasonal agriculture, innovative plant breeding techniques, and unconventional initiatives aimed at augmenting agricultural productivity and efficiency.

Improved processes and innovative plant crossing methods lead to higher yields in grapes, soybeans and sunflowers

During his visit, Mr. Azad engaged in discussions with distinguished scholars from the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Vienna (BOKU), such as with Univ.Prof. Dr. Hans-Peter KAUL, serving as Head of the Institute of Agronomy and Deputy for the Department of Crop Sciences and with Univ.Prof. Dr. Johann VOLLMANN, both esteemed figures renowned for their expertise in plant grafting and enhanced production methodologies.

Mr. Azad showcased his groundbreaking pioneer work in plant grafting techniques and unprecedented approaches to inter-crossing botanical families, aimed at mitigating diseases and enhancing agricultural productivity. Notably, he demonstrated his unconventional self-developed methodology, which has yielded remarkable results, such as doubling the productivity of sunflowers and successfully hybridizing soybeans with rapeseeds to develop a more resilient and productive plant species. His innovative endeavors hold immense potential to revolutionize the agricultural production, thereby positively impacting global food security.

During his visit to the BOKU agriculture research facilities in Tulln, Mr. Azad observed the intricacies of the plant grafting process and contributed insights gleaned from his extensive experience, thereby offering valuable perspectives for potential enhancements. Following this engagement, BOKU extended an official invitation to Mr. Azad to participate in this year's soy planting activities in Austria.

Seminar on the latest UAE regulatory developments on tax, corporate and immigration law

5 March 2024 – Vienna, Austria

On March 5, 2024, the Embassy of the United Arab Emirates, in collaboration with Crowe UAE and the Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce and with participation of the UAE Ministry of Finance and the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber, hosted a seminar on the latest UAE Regulatory developments with regards on tax, corporate and immigration law.

The seminar was opened by His Excellency Ambassador Hamad Alkaabi, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Austria, who praised the remarkable development of the relationships between the UAE and Austria and the increasing trade volumes between the two countries which reached with one billion euros in 2023 an unprecedented level. HE Ambassador Alkaabi pointed out that the political and economic relations are progressing at a steady positive pace, which reflects the strong and long-lasting character of the relations and the firm efforts of both countries.

In this regard it was highlighted that the UAE Embassy recently received recognition from the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs as one of the best diplomatic representations of the country abroad.

In turn, Martin Woller, Head of the Middle East and Africa Department at the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber, pointed out that the UAE is considered one of the most attractive countries for Austrian investors and business owners, due to the modern facilities it provides in entering the UAE market and the favourable investment climate.

Mr. Woller highlighted again the steadily growing economic relations between Austria and the UAE, underlining that the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber and the Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce both support strengthening economic and commercial relations between the two countries and provide advice and support to those wishing to enter the UAE market.

The Secretary-General of the Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce, DI Mouddar Khouja, for his part, emphasized that the UAE plays a pivotal role globally as a logistical bridge between the East and the West, Africa and Asia. He highlighted the various investments that the UAE is establishing in various countries of the world, noting the Ras Al-Hekma project in Egypt, into which the UAE has invested 35 billion euros.

SG Khouja referred to Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, who recently stated that the UAE’s non-oil foreign trade reached $953 billion in 2023, which is the highest rate in the country’s history.

Mr. Khouja also praised the important role played by the UAE in promoting and disseminating Arab culture, pointing to the role of the Emirate of Sharjah in this important field through its various institutions that serve and nurture Arab culture and preserve the Arab and Islamic cultural and civilizational heritage.

In this context, Mr. Khouja mentioned a scholarship that the Emirate of Sharjah recently provided to 15 male and female students to visit the emirate and take an intensive course in the Arabic language and learn about Arab culture and Islamic heritage. He also highlighted the crucial role of the Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce who helped through its unique network in the UAE to realize this project.

Subsequently, Mrs. Fatima Al Sheikh, from the UAE Ministry of Finance, presented the amendments introduced by the state to the tax system and the new digital facilities available to investors and businessmen wishing to enter the UAE market.

Mrs. Al Sheikh answered questions from the audience about the required administrative procedures and income limits for small and medium-sized companies, noting that new founders with investments not exceeding 3 million dirhams are not subject to taxes, whereas anything in excess of that is subject to a tax rate of 9% of the annual income.

After the opening remarks, Mr. Susilo and Mr. Maier from Crowe presented their insights on the latest UAE Regulatory Development focussing on 3 common use cases:

1. For investors relocating or expanding from Austria to the UAE, key considerations should focus in Austria on exit taxation and taxation of source income, whereas in the UAE the focus should be mainly put on employment and residency law aspects, location and type of the new legal entity.
2. Third-country national investors settled in the UAE and exploring investment opportunities in Austria, should mostly consider general residence immigration regulations and the possibility to be subject to unlimited liability on global income in Austria, whereas in the UAE the business licensing and corporate law aspects as well as residency aspects play an important role.
3. For the recent trend of remote working, Austrian employees working for an Austrian company remotely from the UAE should specifically consider the possibility of limited taxability in Austria, a clear definition of their centre of life, while the Austrian employer has to consider the PE (Permanent establishment) risk and social security and labour law impacts, whereas in the UAE considerations concerning employer obligations, POEM (Place of effective management) vs PE (Permanent establishment) are crucial.

Overall, it can be stated that the UAE still remains one of the countries with the most favourable taxation systems all over the world and a proper tax consultation will ensure a diligent process and protect for any unforeseen tax incidences.

Sharjah Ruler Welcomes SG Khouja and Austrian Cultural Delegation

10 February 2024 – Sharjah, United Arab Emirates 

On February 10, 2024, His Highness Sheikh Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi, the Ruler of the Emirate of Sharjah, warmly received Engineer Mouddar Khouja, the Secretary-General of the Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce, and Philipp Hammer-Purgstall, the President of the Hammer-Purgstall Society. Also warmly welcomed were members of the Austrian delegation and students of Arabic language from Austria, who were honored guests of the Arab Language Academy in Sharjah on a 10-day study trip.

His Highness Sheikh Sultan Al Qasimi extended warm wishes to the Austrian delegation, expressing hopes for a pleasant stay in Sharjah.

The scholarship program, generously provided by the Emirate of Sharjah, is the first initiative and kick-off activity proofing the collaborative efforts between the Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce and the reestablished Austrian Hammer-Purgstall Society. Its objective is to deepen understanding of the Arabic language and culturally explore the captivating Emirate.

Engineer Mouddar Khouja praised Sheikh Al Qasimi's efforts to foster a strong relationship and make the Arabic language more accessible to the dedicated students. He emphasized that Sharjah stands as the premier destination for those eager to delve into the Arabic language and embark on a cultural adventure.

Mr. Philipp Hammer-Purgstall has eloquently recounted the story of his great-grandfather, Freiherr Joseph Hammer-Purgstall, highlighting his outstanding role as a bridge builder between the Orient and Occident. He was proficient in 12 languages and adeptly translated Oriental literature into German, thereby inspiring numerous European scholars, scientists and literati, such as Goethe and other intellectuals.

The scholarship program covered visits to places like Qasimia University, the University of Sharjah, and the Academy of Research. They also explored landmarks in the Emirate of Sharjah. Another notable highlight was the visit to the Arab Language Academy, where Dr. Ahmed Mustaghanmi, the Secretary-General of the Academy, cordially received the Austrian delegation.

The Holy Quran Academy marked the second stop on the Austrian delegation's schedule. Here, the students learned about the Academy's role in supporting electronic recitations, Quranic studies, and research. The delegation had the unique opportunity to explore the seven museums within the complex, showcasing rare manuscripts, the Quranic readings, Quranic personalities, the covering of the Kaaba, the history of Quranic writing and the scientific miracles in the Holy Quran.

Throughout the scholarship program, Austrian students actively engaged in a distinguished program that encompassed various educational and cultural activities. A major part of the program included a daily intensive language course in Arabic. At the end of the program, they received certificates of successful completion.

The Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce is particularly grateful to have supported another project, which aims to strengthen Arab-Austrian relations. The Secretary-General of AACC, Eng. Mouddar Khouja, expressed gratitude to His Highness Sheikh Sultan Al Qasimi for hosting the Austrian students. He also commended the efforts of Dr. Ahmed Mustaghanmi and Mr. Khaled Bin Butti, the Director of Sharjah University City, for the successful implementation of the scholarship program.

Meeting with the Secretary General of OPEC 

16 February 2024 – Vienna, Austria

The Secretary-General of OPEC, H.E. Mr. Haitham Al-Ghais, received AACC’s President Former Minister Dr. Werner Fasslabend and its Secretary General Eng. Mouddar Khouja, for a visit at OPEC‘s headquarters in Vienna. The visit aimed at strengthening cooperation between the chamber and OPEC in the field of energy, economy and renewable energy.

Discussions during the meeting focused on issues related to the energy sector and energy security. The meeting also touched the topic of energy poverty in some regions of the world, and possible solutions to address their needs for energy supply.

Newly-appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Tunisia to Austria

09 February 2024 – Vienna, Austria

On February 9, 2024, Eng. Mouddar Khouja, the Secretary-General of AACC, paid a courtesy visit to Her Excellency Samia Ilhem Ammar, the newly appointed Ambassador of the Republic of Tunisia to Austria, the Slovak Republic, Slovenia, and Croatia. Prior to her current post, Ambassador Ammar served as the Director-General of Cultural Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tunisia and has been the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Tunisian Republic to Hungary from 2015 to 2020.

The Secretary General received a warm welcome by the Ambassador at the premises of the Tunisian embassy in Vienna. During their meeting, Her Excellency Ambassador Ammar and SG Khouja discussed potential collaborations between Austria and Tunisia across various sectors. Additionally, the Secretary-General provided an overview of AACC's extensive portfolio, network, and ongoing activities.

High-Level Kuwaiti Parliamentary
 Friendship Group Visit to Vienna City Council & Austrian Parliament

 24 – 25 January 2024 – Vienna, Austria

In cooperation with the Embassy of the State of Kuwait in Vienna, the Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce facilitated the visit of a high-level Kuwait Parliamentary Friendship Group to Vienna and co-organised meetings at the Vienna City Council and the Austrian Parliament from 24^th -25^th of January 2024.

The delegation was headed by H.E. Mr. Osama AlZeid, and further comprised of Mr. Shuaib Qasem, Mr. Hamad AlOlayan and Mr. Abdelwahab Alessa, all of them distinguished members of the Kuwaiti Parliament.

The visit commenced on 24 January 2024 with an official welcome and reception at the Vienna City Council for the high-level delegates, accompanied by His Excellency Mr. Talal Alfassam, the Ambassador of the State of Kuwait to Austria, together with AACC Secretary General Eng. Mouddar Khouja, in addition to embassy staff and media representatives.  Coordinated with the support of DI Omar Al-Rawi, Member of the State Parliament and Vienna City Council of Vienna, as well as member of the AACC Board of Directors and H.E. Former Minister Dr. Werner Fasslabend, Former Minister and AACC President, the delegates were welcomed as guests of honor to attend a session of the Vienna City Council from the VIP box of the meeting hall. After that, the delegation had the honor of meeting with Mag. Thomas Reindl, the Head of the Vienna City Council, to engage in insightful conversations.

Another key highlight included meetings on 25 January 2024 at the Austrian Parliament, where the Kuwaiti delegation was received for meetings and discussions with Dr. Christoph Matznetter, Chairman of the Committee of Foreign Policy and Member of the National Council, and Member of the AACC’s Board of Directors. Additionally, the delegation had the opportunity to explore the Austrian Parliament. The program also included a productive meeting with Dr. Rudolf Taschner, Chairman of the Committee of Education and Member of the National Council, focusing on potential collaborations in the field of education.

On 17 January 2024, AACC Secretary-General Eng. Mouddar Khouja paid a courtesy visit to the newly appointed Ambassador of the State of Qatar to Austria, the Slovak Republic and Slovenia His Excellency Jassim Yaaqob Al-Hamadi at the premises of the embassy of the State of Qatar in Vienna. The meeting was coordinated and attended as well by Minister pp. Mr. Jamal Aljaber.

The Secretary General introduced the chamber’s rich portfolio, network and activities to the ambassador, and discussed with him the potential of future cooperation between Austria and Qatar in many fields.

Cooperative Talks with Partners of the Libyan Ministry of Economy
for Digital Transformation & Electronic Online Document Handling

29 November 2023, Vienna-Austria

On 29 November 2023, AACC Secretary-General Eng. Khouja received a delegation of high-level representatives from Libya Trade Network, an e-government project implemented by the Libyan Ministry of Economy, to regulate the international trade process inside of Libya and with different related public and private sector institutions.

The Libyan delegation comprised of H.E. Dr. Sliman A.M. Al-Ajili, Former Minister of Economy of Libya; Mr. Emhemed Elderwish, Chairman of the Board of Directors; and Mr. Haitham Rajab, Assistant Executive Director for Digital Commerce Affairs.

The delegation presented the portfolio of the newly established Libya Trade Network, affiliated to the Ministry of Economy, to manage and keep pace with the digital transformation in economy and e-commerce.

In this context, SG Khouja introduced the chamber’s Unified Arab Joint‐Chambers Block Chain Process Project, a project to digitalise the process for export document legalizations and services in the future.

Together, they discussed potentials of future cooperation and the necessary steps to implement the digital transformation in accordance with national and international trade document regulations.

AACC welcomes the Libyan Minister of Industry & Minerals
and delegation at its premises

On 28 November 2023, AACC Secretary-General Eng. Khouja welcomed H.E. Mr. Ahmed Abu Hisa, the Minister of Industry & Minerals of the State of Libya, accompanied by H.E. Dr. Osama Abdulhadi, Ambassador of the State of Libya to Austria, and high-level delegates at the premises of the Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce.

The Libyan delegation comprised of Mr. Mohammed Abdelmalik Elfighi, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Libyan Iron and Steel Company; Mr. Emad Wagad, Director of the Minister’s Office, Ministry of Industry & Minerals; Prof. Abdulhamid El-Sharif, Dean of the Faculty of Industrial Technology, Misurata; and Mr. Abdulkarim Alhaderi, Chief of Cabinet of the Ministry.

The Minister, who also participated as guest of honour in the 13^th Arab-Austrian Economic Forum held one day before at the Haus der Wiener Wirtschaft with more than 200 participants, congratulated AACC to the successful event.  He then presented the official strategy of his ministry in the field of industrialization and cooperation with partners from the private sector.

In this context, AACC invited members and partners with relevant industrial projects and innovations to participate in the meeting and introduce their portfolios.

AACC member Eng. Manfred Hettmer presented the Magnetic Field Oscillation Amplified Accelerator, an industrial application in extracting elementary raw materials from earth soil and other celestial bodies; whereas Eng. Dr. Erwin Greiler, who joined the meeting virtually, introduced his innovative technology for environmental-friendly hydrogen production and carbon-gold application processes that can also be used for genuine desert greening.

The presentations were followed by lively discussions and exchange of ideas between the Libyan delegates and the Austrian representatives.

High-level minister attendance and future technologies at the 13^th Arab-Austrian Economic Forum

Inspiring technological innovations and business potentials with Arab countries were presented at the 13th Arab-Austrian Economic Forum, which was held on November 27, 2023 at the Haus der Wiener Wirtschaft in Vienna with over 200 participants attending.

The Forum was organized by the Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce (AACC) and the Vienna Chamber of Commerce (WKW), in cooperation with official institutions, diplomatic missions of Arab countries and international organizations, and focused on energy strategies and economic cooperation with Arab countries.

At the opening of the Forum, tribute was also paid to the current situation in the region with a minute of mourning for the numerous civilian victims, children and women, and a strong appeal for peace in the Holy Land.

Opening of the Exhibition Area

The event also included an exhibition area with country-specific displays from the Arab embassies of Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Palestine, Saudi-Arabia, Sudan, Syria, Tunisia, United Arab Emirates and Yemen. They presented handicrafts, culinary delicacies and information brochures, and provided the numerous visitors with a colourful insight into their culture and history, as well as interesting business potentials of their countries.

After the Forum, guests and visitors engaged in active networking and exchange of ideas, and enjoyed an exquisite oriental lunch buffet, generously sponsored by OMV AG and Vimpex HandelsgmbH.

AACC coordinates Company Visit for Arab Ambassadors & Diplomats
at Beyond Gravity Austria

4 October 2023 – Vienna, Austria

On 4 October 2023, Arab Ambassadors and Diplomats were invited for an exclusive company visit and tour at Beyond Gravity Austria, initiated and coordinated by the Austro‑Arab Chamber of Commerce. The visit was honoured by a high number of Arab Ambassadors to Austria, among them H.E. Mr. Hamad Alkaabi, the Ambassador of United Arab Emirates and Current President of the Arab Ambassadors Council in Austria; H.E. Dr. Osama Abdulhadi, the Ambassador of the State of Libya; H.E. Mr. Magdi Mofadal Elnour, the Ambassador of the Republic of the Sudan; H.E. Mr. Azzeddine Farhane, the Ambassador of the Kingdom of Morocco; in addition to diplomats from Algeria, Iraq, Jordan, GCC, Oman, Qatar and Tunisia. From AACC, Secretary General Eng. Mouddar Khouja and Member of the Board Dr. Ernst Huber were present, accompanied by the chamber’s office director.

Beyond Gravity Austria’s CEO DI Kurt Kober paid a warm welcome to the high-level delegation and presented the company’s profile and key facts as Austria’s leading space company, and a branch of Beyond Gravity based in Switzerland with headquarters in all over Europe and the US. The company is leading the European market for navigation receivers, and for thermal insulation for satellites, which protects the satellite against cold and heat in space. Other areas of competence are mechanisms for satellites, embedded spaceflight software and containers for the safe transport of satellites on Earth.

Further details on the company’s product portfolio and business units were shared by Mr. Martin Auer, Director Project Management; Mr. Andreas Derntl, Director Marketing & Sales; and Mr. Adrian Girschik, Product & Portfolio Senior Manager Navigation & Payloads. Several program managers and directors of different work units were also present and later introduced their specific work area during the company tour.

After the presentations and an informative exchange with Q & A, the delegates were invited for specific inspections of the cleanrooms and workshop units to gain a deeper on‑site understanding of the company’s production sites and work areas.

The half-day visit programme was rounded up by a generous lunch invitation hosted by Beyond Gravity Austria with Arab buffet and delicacies, served by AACC member Momen Food.

Meeting with Delegation from the Baghdad Chamber of Commerce

28 September 2023, Vienna – Austria

On 28 September 2023, AACC Secretary General Eng. Mouddar Khouja received a delegation of the Baghdad Chamber of Commerce at the chamber’s premises in Vienna upon the kind coordination with the Embassy of the Republic of Iraq in Vienna.

The delegation was headed by Mr. Ali Jawad Kadhim Almukhtar, Member of the Board of Directors of Baghdad Chamber of Commerce (BCC), and comprised of several Iraqi entrepreneurs that are members of the Baghdad chamber, including Mr. Amer Abdulrahman Ali, Mr. Hameed Rashid Saeed, Mr. Mohammed Khazaim, and Mr. Tahir Almamouri. Ms. Manar Abed, Second Secretary at the Iraqi embassy in Vienna, was also present at the meeting.

After a warm welcome to all delegates, SG Khouja presented the AACC’s history and portfolio and shared informed about the present economic situation of Austria and recent developments on national and EU level, including economic information about Austria and the Arab countries in general, and most interesting sectors for partnerships and businesses in Iraq as Austria’s second largest Arab trade partner. He also outlined the recent visit of Austria’s Foreign Minister Dr. Alexander Schallenberg to Iraq, resulting in the invitation for an official visit of the Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia' al-Sudani to Austria soon, as another proof of mutual interest in economical cooperations between the two countries.

Mr. Ali Almukhtar, on his turn, also gave a brief on the Baghdad Chamber of Commerce and its work and activities.

Mr. Samuel Krupensky from Kruner Industries GmbH, a new member company of AACC, joined the meeting online and presented his innovative proprietary binder technology, developed to replace cement and create a concrete-like substance for further use in various building and construction industries.

By the end of the meeting, Mr. Ali Jawad Kadhim Almukhtar honoured Secretary General Khouja with a beautiful gift box from the Baghdad Chamber of Commerce.

Two days before that meeting, on 26 September 2023, Secretary General Mr. Mouddar Khouja was exclusively invited by the Vienna Economic Chamber, represented by its Deputy Director Dr. Alexander Biach and his team, to meet the Baghdad Chamber Delegation at its premises “House of Economy” (Haus der Wirtschaft), where the Secretary General facilitated the meeting with his inputs and multilingual support in Arabic, German and English.

Courtesy Visit of Finncham Austria’s President to AACC Secretary-General

On 27 September 2023, the Secretary-General of the Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce Eng. Mouddar Khouja received the President of FinnCham Austria Mr. Johannes Axnix for a Courtesy Visit at the premises of AACC.

Founded 50 years ago, FinnCham Austria is the Austro-Finnish Chamber of Commerce, providing business services, networking events, consultancies and support for Finnish enterprises in Austria and vice versa, in close cooperation with the Finnish Embassy in Vienna.

SG Khouja and President Axnix introduced their chamber’s respective portfolios and discussed scopes of potential cooperation between AACC and FinnCham with focus on specific topics relevant for Austria, Finland and the Arab region.

AACC meets with High-level Delegation
from the Libyan Ministry of Agriculture

4-6 September 2023, Vienna-Austria

On September 4, 2023, AACC Secretary-General Eng. Khouja paid a visit to H.E. Dr. Osama Abdulhadi, Ambassador of the State of Libya to Austria at the premises of the embassy, to meet with a delegation from the “Agricultural and Livestock Projects Development and Investment Agency” of the Libyan Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Marine Resources.

The delegation was headed by Dr. Ahmed Mustafa Abu Zeid, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Agency; Ms. Sumayyah Abdulhadi, Directorate of the International Cooperation Department; Mr. Albashir Abokhris, Directorate of Relations; Mr. Hossein Basher and Mr. Alfeetouri Ahmad Omar Salmah, Members of the Board of Directors. Mr. Essa ESSA, Minister Plenipotentiary at the embassy, was also present.

Later in the afternoon, Eng. Khouja received the high-level delegation at the premises of AACC for further discussions with Eng. Amer Auf, businessman, CEO of Bags Grain Handels AG and member of AACC, to explore opportunities for collaboration in advancing agricultural practices and technologies in Libya, and in strengthening international cooperation and partnerships in the fields of agriculture and livestock.

The next day, the Libyan delegation had a meeting with UNIDO, to discuss support in agricultural cooperation and projects.

On 6 September 2023, AACC coordinated a visit of the delegation to BAUER GmbH Röhren‑ und Pumpenwerk, an Austrian company leading in irrigation systems, waste water and slurry technologies based in Styria. The high-level delegates were warmly welcomed by Mr. Andreas Schitter, Shareholder and Financial Director at Bauer GmbH, who presented the company’s profile. Bauer GmbH has gained renown for its smart and environmentally sustainable product line, using high-quality materials and precise manufacturing systems. With a global presence spanning over 16 locations across the world, their irrigation systems are used on 2.5 million hectares of fields worldwide, serving customers in over 100 countries. The company had previously undertaken projects in Libya two decades ago and expressed a keen interest in re-establishing its presence in the region. Encouragingly, the Libyan side responded positively to this initiative.

This visit marked a significant step in fostering partnerships between Libya and Austria, especially in the agricultural sector.

AACC organises the “Ambassadors’ Meeting” in collaboration with the Vienna School of International Studies

On 8 September 2023, the Austro-Arab Chamber of Commerce (AACC) organised the “Ambassadors’ Meeting at Vienna School of International Studies”, in collaboration with the Vienna School of International Studies (also known as “Diplomatische Akademie Wien”), which was marked by the participation of the Austrian ambassadors to Kuwait, Libya, Syria and the United Arab Emirates, as well as a number of Arab embassies, represented by Their Excellencies the Ambassadors or diplomats in charge of bilateral relations.

The participants were warmly welcomed by AACC’s President H.E. Former Minister Dr. Werner Fasslabend; H.E. Ambassador Dr. Emil Brix, Director of Vienna School of International Studies; H.E. Mr. Hamad Alkaabi, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates to Austria and Current President of the Arab Ambassadors Council in Vienna; and AACC Secretary-General Eng. Mouddar Khouja, who moderated the meeting.

Building on the success of last year’s initial meeting, this year’s event aimed again to forge connections between Austrian Ambassadors accredited to Arab countries and their Arab counterparts based in Austria. A key part of the event was the concise overview of recent developments and insights shared by Austrian diplomatic representatives posted across various Arab countries. This was followed by brief statements from their Arab counterparts. All participants showed keen interest and willingness to further strengthen the mutual relations.

At the end of the meeting, the attendees had the opportunity to further exchange thoughts and ideas at a tasty networking buffet arranged by AACC member and catering partner Momen Food.
