On 31 October 2022, AACC organised a company visit to Perlinger Gemüse GmbH in Wallern, located in the Austrian province of Burgenland, exclusively for Their Excellencies the Arab Ambassadors in Austria.
Coordinated by AACC Secretary General Eng. Mouddar Khouja and supported by H.E. Mr. Hans Niessl, the former governor of Burgenland, the delegation consisted of the Ambassador of the Republic of Iraq H.E. Mr. Baker Fattah Hussen, the Ambassador of the Sultanate of Oman H.E. Mr. Yousuf Aljabri, the Ambassador of the Republic of the Sudan H.E. Mr. Magdi Mofadal, the Ambassador of the Republic of Yemen H.E. Mr Haytham Shoja’addin, in addition to Mr. Jamal Al-Jaber, Minister pp. at the Embassy of the State of Qatar, Mr. Abdelkhalek Medjeber, Counsellor at the Embassy of the People's Republic of Algeria, and Senator Walter Gerbautz, Secretary General of Federation of Austrian-Foreign Societies – PaN. The delegation was warmly welcomed by CEO Werner Perlinger and his son Patrick, who introduced the history of the company and its production.
Perlinger Gemüse GmbH is Austria’s leading vegetable producer and pioneer in glasshouse farming, with the biggest glasshouse farm in Europe. Having started-off as a small farming business in the 80ies, the ambitious vision and diligence of Mr. Perlinger and his family soon turned it into one of Austria’s main local suppliers for fresh vegetables.
The company is currently producing over 50 different types of vegetables by using various technologies and expertise in both, vertical farming and bio-farming. Mr. Perlinger and his son provided a profound insight to their farming technology by demonstrating the use and outcome of the vertical glass farming technology in detail: the use of coco leaves as fertile soil; regular drip irrigation at least 30 times a day; a circular return of CO2 produced by the plants themselves; a smart cooling, ventilation and canalization system for ideal temperature and humidity in the glass house, combined with natural sunlight and shade systems allowing for ideal light conditions for the plants; the use of beneficial insects against pests instead of using chemical substances. In the case of pepper, these steps combined result in a crop of approx. 28-30 kg of pepper per square meter per year.
Their Excellencies the Ambassadors and delegates showed keen interest to inspect the farm and glass house from different angles, and to get an insider view into the farming technology from Perlinger as Austria’s best-practice reference and supplier.
